In 1989, in Patissia (a neighbourhood of Athens), a small family business appears which launches a new and unique type of mattress: metal-free, made out of 100% natural materials and 100% recyclable. The company is called COCO-MAT, a combination of the words coco (fibre) and mat(tress).
It was a question of when (not if), until this company became a household name in the mattress market backed by a production facility in Xanthi. The factory there does not pollute the environment, it does not have any chimneys, it recycles the water is uses, it does not use any chemicals or toxics during the manufacturing process and re-uses material which is left over from manufacturing.
Today, in the whole of Greece, the Netherlands, Spain, Cyprus, Belgium, Germany, Saudi Arabia and China thousands of customers can try the famous beds, mattresses and other sleep-related products all of which are made out of sustainable raw materials, like wood, wool, coco fibre, natural rubber, cotton, linen, seaweed and horse hair.
Ecology is not just a word for COCO-MAT, but its raison dtre. COCO-MATs personnel is made up people coming from 13 different countries and belonging to 9 religious backgrounds, as well as refugees and people with a disability,
COCO-MAT lives within the community it is part of. Its social support is continuous and discreet based on the belief that our relation to nature is the only important one and the only one which enables sustainable development.
